THE HUB
COMMUNAL LOUNGE, DIFC DUBAI
As my very first commercial project in Dubai back in 2017, we approached this communal lounge at Index Towers with boundless enthusiasm, and plenty of creative problem solving. When Index Management insisted on keeping an existing mirror wall, I saw it as a design opportunity rather than a limitation.
We began by underfoot: installing warm engineered oak flooring that instantly set a cozy, inviting tone. I then designed and engineered a bespoke glass library to sit directly against the mirror. Anchored from ceiling to floor, it showcases accessories, plants, and books, while reflecting the 30th floor skyline back into the room, amplifying that city-above-it-all energy.
Together, we carved the lounge into distinct zones. In the meeting area, we selected a sleek Italian black table and paired it with chairs that marry tanned leather backs and charcoal-tweed fronts, perfect for collaborative sessions. Across from that, I configured a vis-à-vis four-seater lounge for easy conversation, and wove in a dedicated TV nook with a plush sofa for unwinding. For a dash of fun, we introduced a bespoke billiard table, burgundy-lined inside, matte black on the outside, and a foosball table in black and chrome.
Our lighting choices bring everything to life: floor and table lamps by Flos layer in just the right warmth and drama. We anchored the décor with a few standout accessories; an oversized globe sphere in stainless sheets, plenty of generous greenery in grand pots and arranged six ottomans in varying blues around companion side tables. Finally, we wrapped it all up with a bar area complete with an espresso machine and fruit baskets, creating a perfect balance of work, play, and community in one vibrant, reflective space.
